The Weetock trail is only one corner of the Croatan which encompasses many excellent hiking, camping and kayaking opportunties.
Dixon Field (further North on HW 58 from the Weetock) provides kayak access to the White Oak River, primitive camping near the river (with a convenient outhouse), and some hiking trails.
The photo on the left is a view of the White Oak River as it passes Dixon Field. There is a nearby motocross track that can be noisy at times, but otherwise Dixon Field is far enough off the beaten track that it makes a great place to commune with nature.
If you are looking for something more civilized, Cedar Point Park is a part of the Croatan that is managed by Cedar Point with a designated camping are that has excellent facilities. There is a charge for camping there, but they have hookups for RVs, nice bathrooms, potable water, and even showers for campers. Cedar Point Park also has some scenic walking trails, a nice parking lot, and a free boat launch that is great for kayaks and small boats because it’s too shallow for a lot of larger boats.
The Great Lake is a shallow lake that is almost 2 miles across in some places. The cypress trees that grow in the lake are definitely worth checking out. I recommend taking a canoe or kayak around the lake for some splendid views. Be warned that windy days can get pretty rough. The waves can be fun if you know what you’re getting into.
