This website is totally unofficial!!! It is the brainchild of a hiking/kayaking/camping enthusiast who spends a lot of time in the Croatan National Forest. The official web-site which is operated by the National Forest Service, a division of the USDA.
You will note, from the official map, that only the first segment of the trail is officially recognized. There are roughly 11 additional miles (17.7 km) of trail that are not.
It is my understanding that the original trail was blazed and cleared by the Carteret Wildlife Club (the metal blazes you see along much of the trail). The trail course was partly revised and re-blazed by Daniel Baumgartner using blue and white plastic ribbon. The current trail that we are trying to maintain follows the blue and white blazes. There are places where the new trail deviates from that designated by the metal blazes.
Check out the Carteret Wildlife Club’s Weetock trail page for more background information about their club and their activities.
