April 18, 2024: Well, this will be a pretty boring update. I barely took any photos on this trip. I fully intended to paddle into the beaver lake and set up camp for the night. Then I’m sure I would have taken a bunch of photos. As it turned out, I was just paddling on the White Oak River and Hunters Creek most of the time. My camping plans got changed when Fred told me he had to meet some people from out of town in Morehead City, so he wouldn’t be venturing out into the forest. I had several hours left before sunset when I found out I’d be flying solo, so I decided to paddle back to Long Point and hang out with the campers there.
There were several, honest to goodness, tent campers at Long Point. We discussed everything from camping gear to quicksand, to the future of A.I. It was nice to see people enjoying the peace and quiet at the campground. I left when it got dark, because that’s when the alligators come up on land and drag people into the water. 😉
BTW: You may have noticed that the park was closed part of Saturday and Sunday (April 13,14). Those were the days that EMS was searching for the body of the 37 year old man who fell out of his boat and drowned on April 13 near Long Point. They did find his body and the forest roads are all open again.
