Camping on the First Day of Fall

Estimated read time 2 min read

I camped alone near the beaver lake on the night of Sept 20, 2025. The forest was very dry, so I didn’t bother with a fire. I arrived after dark, set up my rain fly, my Haven hammock, and my hammock chair. There were very few mosquitoes, so I was able to read in my hammock chair until I was ready to crawl into my Haven.

Sometimes it’s cathartic just being in the forest and listening to the forest sounds. Last night was no exception. The hardest part about going camping alone is getting my ass out there. Once I’m there, I’m usually quite content.

I packed a sleeping bag, because the nights have been getting pretty cool. Last night, however, did not get below 70’ish (20C) so the sleeping bag was overkill. I slept on top of it for most of the night. When I did pull it over me, I kept one leg out.

Of course, the morning was warm and the clouds cleared around 08:30. It turned out to be a beautiful day so I stayed out until about 14:30. I could have stayed longer, but I’ve always got something to do at home. I keep telling myself that I’m going to do a 2 night camping trip, but it’s really hard to do when I’m only 20 minutes from home. I’ll have to plan a trip to the mountains. Then I’ll be happy to stay in the forest for a couple nights, at least.

Before I left the forest, I hiked a few more miles and I met up with Fred for some of it. It was nice, hiking in daylight and being able to bring back some photos.
