I finally got to the east side of HW58 for an overnight camping trip. I’m glad I didn’t let the forecast of cool, windy weather hold me back; it was absolutely delightful. My only complaint, if I had one, was that I packed hastily and carried way too much weight. I didn’t need many of the things I carried on my back. I do not regret taking the Haven hammock. I just can’t say enough about how much I enjoy sleeping in that hammock.
When I arrived, I found the section of stream where I was going to be hanging out to be flooded because a natural dam had formed downstream where a log had gotten lodged against a leaning tree and then 2 tons of sticks, logs and leaves got caught and eventually dammed the stream. So, after setting up my hammock and rain fly, I set out to break the log jam.
I took my laptop with me so I could check my e-mail and make sure I didn’t have any emergencies, so I was able to enjoy a lazy morning. The sun came out around 10:00, and I was so glad I stayed to enjoy the sunshine. The bird songs were especially lovely after the sun came out.
I drove down to Long Point after I hiked back to my car, then I went back to Lollipop road and took a short-cut across the cut-down to the Weetock trail. I collected a few wild onions to spice up the lunch I whipped up when I got to a nice spot on the trail (it was already after 13:00).
While I was eating lunch, two white hound dogs came down the trail and greeted me. They were very friendly, and mildly interested in my lunch. Sadly, I had nothing to share with them. The two dogs went on their way, but one of them met me at my car when I was loading up to return home. I scratched her behind the ears for a while, but she was nervous about her missing partner and soon she set out looking for them. It was cute, because she kept coming back to me as if to say, “I want to hang out, but I must find my buddy”. I waited around for a while to see if she would find her friend, but eventually, she was long out of site and I had to be on my way. Maybe I’ll pack some dog food on my next trip.
Neither of the two dogs I encountered on the trail had a collar. However, they were very friendly. Please comment if you have seen them or if you know who they might belong to. I will probably try to pick them up if I see them again. I’ll take them to see if they are chipped … assuming I can get them in my car.
