Holsten Creek After the Tropical Depression

Estimated read time 2 min read

I just love water. I love it even more when the weather is warm. I had to hike up Holsten Creek from HW 58 to check it out after the tropical depression passed over. I got a photo of the creek a couple days before the big rain event (on the right).

On September 17, 2024 (after the rain) I went back out, and I tried to get the same photo, although I was using a different lens and it was later in the day (below, left).

I wore my new moccasins and shorts so I could wade through the water that I knew I’d encounter on my trek. It looked like the water was already receding from it’s peak. In a couple of days, it will probably look completely different.

I am happy we got some significant precipitation. We really did need it, but it would be nice if we didn’t go from drought to 7 inches (18 cm) in one or two days. Carolina Beach got something like 16 inches (41 cm)! It wasn’t even a tropical storm; just a depression!

I enjoyed my hike. I took a dip in the creek, waded thigh deep through the side streams, set up my hammock chair in a few places to just take in the beauty around me, and I explored some places I haven’t been to in a few months.

I found a sweet spot to hang my hammock chair. I can’t wait to go back, but I guess my next trip will be to explore some sections of the Weetock trail that have pretty streams near them.
