Fred and I spent the night in the forest on Feb 24, 2025. We hiked out on Feb 25. I wasn’t planning a camping trip, but Fred found out that he didn’t have to work on Tuesday (Feb 25) and he suggested we should camp out. The forecast was for a cool night (a low in the mid 30’s … 2-4C). I’m not sure how cold it actually got, but I wasn’t cold in my 20 degree (-7C) sleeping bag.

We set up camp about 250 ft (~80 meters) from the trail in a really pretty spot with a small stream at the bottom of the hill. It turns out we we lucky we didn’t decide to try out one of the campsites I scouted recently on the east side of HW58; when we were leaving the forest, forestry was monitoring a controlled burn that looked like it stretched from Holsten creek to Hunters creek on the east side of the highway.
I didn’t crawl out of my hammock until 8:30, by which time it was 54 degrees (~12C) and the sun was shining through the trees. I had to get to the office for a 13:00 meeting, so I didn’t have a lot of time, but I did make breakfast and coffee, and I took some photos around the campsite.

I’m still playing with my new shelter; the one that is made to hang a hammock inside. I’m pretty sure it’s not going to be a good warm weather shelter, so I’m trying to enjoy it and explore it’s features before it gets much warmer. By the time I was packing up my gear to hike out, it was probably 80 degrees (35C) inside the shelter, with the sun shining on it. If I hadn’t been dressed for cooler weather, it might have been pleasant.
