Summer Hike East of 58

Estimated read time 2 min read

I’m still hiking, but not as often, as the weather is pretty darn warm … in case you hadn’t noticed. By the time I got to Holsten Creek last night, I was soaked with sweat, so I found the deepest spot in the creek that I could find and laid down in the water with all my clothes on, to cool off. Needless to say, I was soaking wet for the rest of my hike.

After cooling off, I took a few minutes to sit in my hammock chair and listen to the sounds of the forest after dark. It was very dark by then. There was still some light in the sky, but the forest canopy was too thick to let much light through. The photo of me in my hammock was taken with a 10 second exposure using a fast lens at ISO 800. Even then, it was still dark.

There were lots of spider webs and large spiders, as is typical this time of year. I no longer get creeped-out by spiders, but I do not enjoy walking through their webs and getting spider silk all over my face. Unfortunately, that is something you have to deal with if you are hiking in the forest this time of year; especially at night.
