Summer Solstice Camping

Estimated read time 2 min read

The forecast was calling for a low of slightly below 70 F (21 C), which seemed comfortable enough for sleeping in the forest. We got a late start. It was well after dark when we set up our camp. It was close to midnight when we crawled into our hammocks.

I set up the “Preself Screen House” for hammocks that I bought from Amazon. It’s not heavy, you set your hammock up inside it, and it is, essentially, a rain fly with a bug net hanging down to the ground. There is no floor in it, and it has no poles. You suspend it between the same two trees you select to hang your hammock.

I think this is the first time I slept in my Haven Hammock inside that shelter. It worked well. It was nice to be able to make coffee in the morning without fending off insects. I did manage to bring a June bug into my hammock when I was setting it up. It took me a while to find it and put it outside.

It was a pleasant night in the forest. I used only a bed-sheet for warmth, and that was perfect. I slept pretty well, although I woke up several times. I think there was a bear, ravaging rotten logs in the vicinity of our camp, but I didn’t actually see anything or hear anything that would tell me for sure.

Anyway, we slept late and took our time with breakfast, coffee, and breaking camp. Once we broke camp it was getting very warm, so we made a beeline for the car and left the forest around noon on June 21.

I don’t often see rattlesnakes anymore, so I was happy to see a rattlesnake crossing the road. It didn’t seem to be in a hurry to get off the road, so I stopped the car and took some pictures; from a safe distance.
