I went hiking on the south side on September 10 in daylight. When the sun was getting near the western horizon, I drove to Long Point to watch the sunset and take some photos.
After sunset, Fred joined me for a night hike on the Weetock from Long Point Rd to Haywood Landing. We found the trail to be pretty badly overgrown in places. We did do some trail cleanup, especially where the trail crosses an open field. That bit was so badly overgrown it was hard to tell there was a trail, so we spent some time hacking back the vegetation. Although it’s not perfect, the trail is now very obvious and easy to follow.
The old bridges on that section of trail, and anyone who has hiked it is probably aware, are in bad need of being replaced or even removed. They are broken down and slippery. I recommend walking along side the bridge where it is in particularly bad condition.
The mosquito situation went from pretty bad to almost non-existent, over the course of my hike. They seemed to be at their worst in the daytime. We heard a few on our night hike, but they were not nearly as bad as they were when I was on the south-side before sunset.
I took several photos while I still had daylight and of course I took some of the sunset. I hope you enjoy them.
