After the deluge stopped, on Saturday, June 14, I went out to the southside of Hillfield Rd (near the unofficial Weetock trail) and set up my hammock, the rain fly, and an extra tarp because I was pretty sure I would get rained on. I didn’t.

It was a nice night. I woke up at the crack of dawn, got up for a few minutes, then promptly crawled back into my cozy hammock and slept until about 8:30 (at least partly to avoid mosquitos). I took only a sheet for warmth and that was perfect. It was just enough cover to give me a little warmth and comfort.

I didn’t get out of the forest until noon on Sunday, June 15. It was very pleasant, but by noon it was starting to get “warm”. If you know what I mean?
I did, however, have plenty of shade at my campsite. It was practically dark there, even in full sun. When I was trying to take photos under the tarp, I had to adjust my camera like it was near sunset. In the photos on the left you can see me, packing up in near darkness with the sun blazing in the background.
I had enough tarps up to throw a poker game in the pouring rain, but I ended up being the only one on this trip. Sometimes it’s nice to go out alone and read a good book. It was just that huge Kelty tarp that made the campsite feel kind of empty. 😉
Obviously, we’ve been getting some rain. The Croatan, south of Maysville seems to be getting less rain than Hubert, where I live. I’ve been contemplating a rain gauge in the forest, somewhere. The streams are flowing nicely and there are a lot of dragon flies. Some of them are quite colorful. I probably would have taken more dragonfly photos if my coffee hadn’t been boiling on the camp stove.
