I’ve been picking some blackberries on my last few trips. There are some really large, juicy ones along the new connector trail (the one that was cut by the conservation workers) from the Hillfield Road (Dove Field) parking area and the Weetock to the south. You can also connect to the east and west, but I’m not trying to maintain those connectors and they are getting pretty grown over.
The next chance I get … or rather, when I think of it … I am going to take my trimmer out on that connector trail and make it easier to follow.
Fred Bear and I arrived in the forest shortly after the brief rain shower. We picked some berries and then we headed off to hike the south-side section of the Weetock Trail. We didn’t do the entire section and our route was a little convoluted because we had a couple things we wanted to check out, and another connector I wanted to blaze to make it easier to follow in the dark. It seems like we are always hiking in the dark. My step counter said I took more than 13,000 steps and I was carrying a 25 lb load in my tactical backpack. That’s not a long distance, but it gave my legs a much needed workout. I’ll be taking a two day kayaking trip next weekend, so I need to make sure I give my legs a good stretch before that.
I don’t have much else to report, except that I was told by a police officer on my way out that there was [another] assault at Long Point. I don’t want to scare anyone off of camping there, but this year I’ve talked to at least one person who had gear stolen from there and another person who was involved in a fight with a drunk who was allegedly assaulting his girlfriend. I didn’t witness either of these things, but apparently there was another assault last night that was serious enough that the police were investigating.
Personally, I don’t camp at Long Point because there are too many people in and out of there and I’m just not a very trusting person. I’d much rather be in the woods with the critters than close to a road where people congregate. If you’re a backpacker and you’re looking for good camping spots that are easily accessible, not overgrown with poison ivy, and not too close to the road, hit me up for details. I know of several nice spots for primitive camping.
