I finally got out for a hike on July first. It’s been almost a week since my last visit to the forest, and that was pretty brief. I picked up Fred and we hiked down to Holsten Creek. When I went down there a week ago, the creek was barely flowing. Last night, it had a pretty good flow, thanks to the recent rain. It probably won’t last, if we don’t get more rain, but it’s hurricane season, so we could very well get a flood, soon enough.
After hiking down to Holsten, we did a night hike on the south side. The sign about military training was still up, but we didn’t see any sign of the military. Usually, they have some command & control vans. Anyway, we had a nice hike on the south side. The trail is getting grown over in places. If anyone has time to hike a section or two of the Weetock and hack some of the stuff growing in and over the trail, I’d appreciate it. It’s pretty much impossible for me to keep up with it through the summer.
We stumbled across a place where a bear had dug up an underground beehive. I guess it was looking for honey. All that was left was a few, forlorn looking bees, apparently mourning the loss of their hive. It looked like the bear cleaned them out. I’m always surprised the bears don’t eat more of the blackberries. Those are all done, for the season, in case you were wondering. There were a few left, the last time I looked, but nothing worth getting torn up over.
