I enjoyed near perfect camping weather for an overnight on the trail, October 28-29. It was a little warm for my sleeping bag, but I just had to leave the zipper open. There was almost no mosquitoes, and daytime temps were around 75F (25C).
I hiked around in search of the perfect campsite until it was nearly dark. My first 2 choices had too much poison ivy. The spot I finally selected was devoid of poison ivy and offered everything I wanted except access to fresh, running water. That wasn’t a big deal, since it was a short hike and I could easily carry water for one night.
There was a clear sky and a full moon, so it was pretty bright all night. The forest canopy spared me some of the harsh moonlight, but there were times when my tent was fully illuminated. The screech owls were definitely in the Halloween spirit. As far as I know, I wasn’t visited by any bears, and things were otherwise peaceful.
Fred came out to join me by the campfire for a couple hours, but he didn’t spend the night. He missed an unbelievable dawn as the sun came up through the trees.
