Swimming in the White Oak at Dixon Field

Estimated read time 2 min read

Fred and I took a swim down at Dixon Field in the White Oak River on June 16. I was really surprised to discover that the tide reached that far up the river. I always thought it didn’t reach much past Haywood Landing, but it wasn’t even subtle at Dixon. The water rose at least 6 inches while I was there and the current in the river clearly reversed.

Anyway, we had a very pleasant swim at the end of the day. We had to re-apply our bug repellent (Picaradin) after our swim, because the mosquitoes and biting flies were both out for blood.

We hung out for a while in our hammock chairs. I found it refreshing that I could rest in my hammock chair while putting on my shoes. It also wraps around my head and keeps the mosquitoes from buzzing around my ears, for the most part. You can’t see what I’m talking about in this picture of Fred, because the hammock chair can be configured and used in different ways, depending on your preferences, and the terrain. I really like that it’s quick to hang, weighs under a pound (even with it’s straps), and packs down small enough that I can carry it in my day pack on every excursion.
