Exploring Holsten Creek

Estimated read time 1 min read

On December 15, I went out during daylight hours to explore Holsten Creek (east of HW 58). It was a perfect day, and I had plenty of time to wander and not worry about finding my way out in the dark. There are no trails where I was exploring, so there were times I had to rely on a compass heading, but mostly I was able to follow the ridge that mostly follows the flood plain of the creek. I entered on the south side of the creek and I did not cross it.

The photo on the left is an old cypress tree alongside a tributary that flows into Holsten Creek from the south. The photo at the top of this post is a spot where the high ridge comes right up to the creek’s edge. There is another, similar place further downstream, but it is pretty close to the highway, so you can still hear traffic. This spot is far enough from anything that all you hear are forest sounds.

Below, is a photo of some of the largest cypress knees I can remember seeing. They are generally just tall enough to be a trip hazard on the trail.
