On November 3, I started my hike, south of Hillfield Road where I met Fred. He had spent the night in his hammock. I crashed early on November 2 after a really busy day, so I did not join him until Sunday morning.
Fred had to pick up some kayaks so, after he packed up his camping gear and loaded everything in his vehicle, he left the forest and I drove over to Loopy Rd to explore around the first section of the Weetock trail (the official section). I was mostly wanting to explore the perimeter of the Holsten Creek valley.
I found some excellent camp sites that were located within 100 meters of the trail, close to a stream, and on top of a hill, so they would remain dry in wet weather. You can find a photo of one of the sites somewhere below.
I also visited Holsten Creek a couple of times as I hiked as close to it as I could, without crashing through low-growing vegetation. The creek is very low, as you might expect, given that we are currently in drought conditions. **Be careful with your fires!** It is still running, but it’s very shallow.
If you’re interested in the mosquito report, there are still mosquitoes; at least in the daytime. There aren’t a zillion of them, but they are hungry and persistent.
Having said that, this is perfect camping weather. The daytime temperatures are mild, nighttime temperatures are cool enough for a great night’s sleep, the mosquitoes seem to disappear (for the most part) at night, and we seem to be in a rain-free weather pattern.
